Is Royal Selangor real silver? What tin really is

Aldri topplastede lommer i ringperm — kortene glir ut.

3

No — Royal Selangor is not silver. But this is not a disadvantage. Let us explain what Royal Selangor is actually made of and why pewter is the superior choice for precision craftsmanship and timeless design.

Tin is not silver — and that's a good thing

Royal Selangor is made from 97.5% pure tin with additions of copper and antimony — not silver.

FDA approved for food

Royal Selangor's tin alloy is approved by the US FDA for contact with food and drink.

Lead-free since 1994

Royal Selangor removed lead from its alloy as early as 1994 — long before it became an industry standard.

Better than silver for use

Pewter does not flake, does not oxidize and does not require polishing with chemicals. Silver does all this.

What is Royal Selangor made of?

Royal Selangor products are made of 97% pure pewter (sometimes referred to as "pewter" in English). The remaining 3% is a mixture of antimony and copper — added for strength and flexibility during casting. No lead. No toxic substances. Safe for food contact and daily use.

What is the difference between tin and silver?

  • Tin never rusts — it does not oxidize like silver does. Silver tarnishes over time and requires regular polishing. Pewter retains its luster with minimal maintenance.
  • Pewter is easier to shape — it gives craftsmen the freedom to create detailed patterns and complex shapes that would be very expensive in silver.
  • Pewter is more affordable — silver is a precious metal with a wide range of prices. Pewter gives you quality without paying for the raw material.
  • Pewter ages nicely — over time, pewter develops a natural patina which many believe makes the piece more beautiful. It has a "lived-in" quality that silver does not have in the same way.

Silver is fine. Tin is smarter — and it doesn't need your full attention to look good.

Is it safe to drink from tin?

Yes. Royal Selangor tin is lead-free and approved for food contact. You can drink both cold and hot drinks from tin cups without any health risks. Pewter actually reacts favorably with certain beverages — whiskey and beer are said to taste different in a pewter cup, a tradition with roots dating back a hundred years.

Why does Royal Selangor choose tin over silver?

It's about letting the material do what it's best for. Pewter allows artisans to create detailed textures and shapes — such as the braid pattern in the Weave series or the botanical details in the William Morris collection — with a precision and cost profile that makes the final product accessible to far more people than if it were made in silver.
