Royal Selangor and sustainability — pewter as a responsible material choice
1

Aldri topplastede lommer i ringperm — kortene glir ut.

3

A metal with a low environmental impact

At a time when consumers are increasingly demanding sustainability, it is worth taking a closer look at what tin really is — and why Royal Selangor's production method is more environmentally friendly than most alternatives.

Royal Selangor sustainability and environment

PEFC certified

Royal Selangor is certified to the PEFC standard for sustainable resource management.

100% recyclable

Tin does not lose its properties when melted. All waste from production is remelted and reused.

Lead-free since 1994

Royal Selangor removed lead from its alloy in 1994 — long before industry followed suit.

Anti-disposable culture

A Royal Selangor piece is designed not to be thrown away. It is the most sustainable gift you can give.

Tin as a reusable material

Tin is 100% recyclable without loss of quality. At Royal Selangor, all tin waste (called "swarf") — filings, surplus foundries, discarded prototypes — is collected and remelted to produce new products. Nothing is thrown away. This closed material loop means that every kilogram of tin in the factory can potentially live forever.

In comparison, many mass-produced plastic objects end up in landfill after a few years of use. A Royal Selangor piece, on the other hand, can be passed down for generations — and that in itself is the most sustainable form of consumption.

PEFC-certified wood in packaging

Royal Selangor uses PEFC-certified wood in its gift boxes and packaging. PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) is the world's largest certification program for sustainable forestry — and means that the wood is harvested from forests that are managed according to the highest ecological, social and ethical standards. Founded in 1999, PEFC is an international non-profit organization with a presence in over 50 countries.

FDA-approved and safe for food and drink

Royal Selangor tin is FDA-approved (US Food and Drug Administration) for contact with food and drink. The alloy — 92-97% pure tin with copper and antimony — does not contain lead, and is safe for beverages, including acidic beverages such as citrus juice and wine. This distinguishes Royal Selangor from historical pewter, which at times contained harmful levels of lead.

Pieces manufactured to Royal Selangor's standards are exported to Europe, the USA, Australia and Japan — all with strict requirements for material conformity.

The most sustainable gift is one you don't throw away. Royal Selangor is designed to last generations.

Production with social responsibility

Royal Selangor is a fifth generation family company, founded in 1885 in Kuala Lumpur. Their 500+ employees in the tinsmith workshop in Setapak have working conditions regulated by Malaysian labor laws, and the company actively invests in vocational training and the continuation of traditional craft methods.

The Visitor Center in Setapak — which receives over 100,000 visitors per year — functions as a living museum and training center ensuring that the old techniques are passed on to the next generation of tinsmiths.

Choose quality over quantity

The most sustainable gift is one that is never thrown away. A Royal Selangor piece is designed to last a lifetime — and beyond. It does not corrode, rust or lose shape. If you choose Royal Selangor over mass-produced gift items made of plastic or glass, you choose quality over goods — and that is perhaps the biggest statement of sustainability you can make as a consumer.
