The difference between Royal Selangor and cheap pewter — is it worth paying more?

Aldri topplastede lommer i ringperm — kortene glir ut.
At a gift market or a tourist shop, you can easily find pewter-like objects at a fraction of the Royal Selangor price. Some are actually tin. Many are not. And although both may look the same in an online store photo, the difference is clear in the hand — and over time.
97.5% pure tin
Royal Selangor only uses 97.5% pure tin alloy. Cheap "tin" can have down to 60% and the rest lead.
Hand cast vs. machine-cast
Cheap pewter is machine-made. Royal Selangor is hand cast and polished manually — you can tell the difference.
Durability for generations
Cheap pewter discolours, loosens and breaks in a few years. Royal Selangor does not.
Lead-free and FDA approved
Royal Selangor is lead-free and approved for food use. Cheap unregulated tin is often not.
Material quality
Royal Selangor uses 97% pure tin — the highest standard available for precision casting. Cheap alternatives tend to use lower tin percentages, more antimony than necessary, and in some cases lead or other metals that are unsuitable for food contact and that give a dull, gray finish over time.
The Casting Process
Each Royal Selangor piece is cast individually in sand moulds, cooled and ground down by hand. Deviations in the surface are removed by experienced craftsmen. Inexpensive alternatives are pressed or injection molded — processes that are fast but never provide the same depth of detail.
Surface treatment
Royal Selangor pieces are polished through several stages — from coarse to ultra-fine polishing — to achieve the characteristic gloss or matte "satin" finish depending on the design. Cheap products are often polished once, and it is often visible.
The price you pay for Royal Selangor is the price of a life without regrets. Cheap tin is a compromise.

Detaljrikdom
Look at a Royal Selangor Weave piece: the braid pattern is millimeter precise and continuous. On cheap imitations, such patterns are often indistinct, asymmetrical or flatten at the edge. That is the difference between a design and an imitation.
Durability
Royal Selangor pewter is made to last for generations. It doesn't bend, it doesn't wear down, it doesn't rust. Cheap alternatives can oxidize, become discolored or lose their shape when in contact with moisture or heat.
Is it worth it?
For a gift object that marks something important — yes, always. A Royal Selangor piece is not just one thing; it's an investment in something that will look good and mean something in 30 years. A cheap pewter piece might be nice for the first few months, but it's not something you pass on.
