Pewter's three finishes — satin, brilliant and antique: what's the difference?
1

Aldri topplastede lommer i ringperm — kortene glir ut.

3

Not all pewter surfaces are equal

One of the most common questions we get from customers is: "Why do some Royal Selangor pieces look duller than others?" The answer lies in the three different surface finishes used — and the choice between them is not random, but a careful design decision that affects both appearance, maintenance and user experience.

Royal Selangor pewter with various finishes

Satin Lustre

The classic Royal Selangor finish. Matt-blank, calm and timeless — suits all interior styles.

Brilliant Finish

High gloss polished for maximum reflection and dramatic expression. Perfect for table decorations and collectibles.

Antique Finish

Dark patinated fields highlight details and give a historic, nostalgic look.

Choose according to use

Satin for daily use and office decor. Brilliant for display objects. Antique for historical aesthetics.

Satin Lustre — the classic matte silver sheen

Satin luster is Royal Selangor's signature finish and the one you come across most often in their range. The surface is soft, matt and diffusely reflective — just like silk fabric in sunlight. The finish is achieved through the combination of scotching and hand polishing, where the tinsmith works the surface in one smooth direction.

Who is it for? Satin luster is the safest finish for everyday use. It hides fingerprints and minor scratches better than high gloss, and it ages gracefully — over time it develops a warm patina that many collectors appreciate.

Care: Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. If more thorough cleaning is required: warm water and mild soap. Never steel wool — it scratches the surface.

Brilliant Finish — mirror-shine like silver

Brilliant finish is Royal Selangor's most dramatic surface treatment. Through a series of machine polishing with progressively finer polishing compounds, a mirror-clear, depth-reflecting surface that rivals sterling silver is achieved. A piece with a brilliant finish works almost like a mirror — you can see yourself in it.

Who is it for? Brilliant finish is the natural choice for pieces intended for display — trophies, statuettes, prestige gifts and table centerpieces. It's the finish that impresses at first glance.

Fix: Requires a little more attention. Fingerprints are clearly visible and should be wiped off regularly with a dry microfiber cloth. Avoid water with lime content — always wipe dry after contact with water.

Antique Finish — that which looks old from day one

Antique finish is the most characterful of the three and gives the piece a look as if it has been in the family for generations. A dark patina is deliberately added to all recesses and details, while the highest points are polished bright. The contrast between dark and light highlights design details and ornaments dramatically.

Who is it for? Antique finish is perfect for classic designs, figurines, auspicious pieces and anything with a historical or cultural reference. It is the finish you choose when you want the piece to tell a story.

Care: Antique pieces are the easiest to maintain — patina is part of the design. Wipe off dust with a soft cloth. Never use chemicals or acidic cleaners that can remove the original patina.

Three finishes — three moods. Same material, three completely different personalities.

Mixed Finish — the best of two worlds

Many Royal Selangor pieces combine two or all three finishes on the same object. A drinking bowl can have a brilliant-polished inside and a satin-finish outside. A figure may have antique indentations with a satin front. These combinations are craftsmanship at its best — and require the tinsmith to have full control over all techniques.

Pewter's natural aging

No matter which finish you choose, pewter will age in its own way. Royal Selangor pewter does not corrode and does not rust. Instead, over time it develops a subtle, warm tone that many find even more beautiful than the original surface. This "living" quality — that the piece changes with you and your home — is one of the most beloved qualities of pewter as a material.
